Independent Contractors of Australia has found that, in the past, research on self-employed people has been poor. The definitions used to identify self-employed people have been inadequate and most analysis has approached the self-employed as if we were some form of 'employees'. For this reason ICA is committed to sourcing research which we believe is of a higher quality and where we can encouraging better targeted research.
In mid-2009 we
pulled together a partnership of Monash University, Roy Morgan Research, the Australian Taxation Office and the Commonwealth Bank to conduct a 'desk audit' of available data on independent contractors (ie) self-employed profiling. No task has been undertaken like this before and it is ground-breaking. Results will be released in March 2010. The research has been possible through a funding arrangement with the CBA.
In early 2009 we
were pleased to see ATO research released which reveals a good deal about the profiles of self-employed people.
